Chapter Five: Trinity

Two days into my trip and the paperwork is organized. Gramps is awake and talking like normal. I sit beside his hospital bed sharing stories about Charlotte and my new man, Noah.

“You promised me a picture,” Gramps says in his cute but stubborn old man ways.

I laugh. “I know, I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy trying to train her, I forgot to take a photo.”

“Surely you’ve taken at least one,” he says. “It means so much to me that you would adopt a dog like the one your grandmother and I had. Charlie was a good dog and kept me company for many years after your grandmother left us.”

But as I get ready to disappoint him by shaking my head, I remember the selfie Noah took of all three of us on our first puppy date. Scanning through my texts from him, I pull up the picture.

“Here,” I say. “This is the only photo I have of her.”

Gramps reaches for his glasses by his bedside and takes my phone to examine the photo closely.

“Well now, would you look at that?” he says.

I tilt my head and glance down at the photo as if I haven’t looked at it a thousand times.

“What?” I ask.

Gramps pulls his glasses down to the tip of his nose and looks at me over the top of them.

“The three of you look so happy,” he says, looking at the picture once more. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so happy, young lady. What a nice-looking family. Great work, he must be a keeper.”

My smile grows wide, “I think he is Gramps. I think he is.”
